The Very Hungry Caterpillar Wooden Domino Set

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a favourite book in our house, as it is in many a house with young children. The story, illustrations and humour just seem to naturally come together in a way which captures the imagination of children and adults. It is one of those books that I don’t mind reading over and over again to my children because I enjoy it as much as they do. The whole family were absolutely delighted therefore when The Very Hungry Caterpillar Wooden Domino Set arrived from Boots for us to review.

All the pictures on the dominoes are taken from the book and are therefore instantly recognisable to any child familiar with the book. This meant that our Little Garden Helpers were instantly interested in finding out more about the game. The pieces are also very colourful and easy to identify when the game is being played. Unlike most domino sets this one does not have different numbers of objects on the dominoes. Each piece has for instance, one strawberry and one pear, or one caterpillar and one apple. This means that each picture is a good size and easy to identify for young children who want to match pictures rather than count. I liked this because it meant that the whole family could join in the game, including Garden Boy at age two.

This did not mean however, that the game was too easy for Garden Girl, at age four because she was able to play the game a bit more tactically than Garden Boy. He simply found a picture to match the ones laid on the table, while Garden Girl, after playing a few times, is learning to try and stop other people being able to play a turn by choosing specific pieces. I would absolutely recommend dominoes as a brilliant family game for anyone with children of varying ages and differing abilities. There are very few games which everyone can play together easily, especially with a child as young as two, but this is one of the more successful ones we have tried. And The Very Hungry Caterpillar Set is a truly delightful one to choose. It would make an excellent, but inexpensive, gift for a young child, either on its own, or with a copy of the book if they don’t already own it.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Wooden Domino Set is available to buy from Boots for £10 but is currently included in their 3 for 2 offer and they have loads of great gifts for children in store and online this Christmas, so its worth browsing.
